“Bob ‘Chilly B’ Crafton, founding member of the influential 80′s electro/hip-hop band Newcleus, passed away this week from complications associated with a stroke.” via boingboing.net
Electro was one style degree away from Kraftwerk – developed by Africa Bambaataa a year before using Kraftwerk samples. Newcleus was at the front of the elctronic tidal wave. Electro utilized breakbeats on a Roland drum machine. Funk samples were often given a futuristic touch through delay and reverb while vocals were emcee’d through a voice box or modulator. Almost whatever you are listening to now, started then.
“Hey! I’m breakin’ here!” Whether on urban cardboard or freshly waxed suburban hardwood, the electro sound influenced the nation with its relation to one of the four base elements of hip hop : B-Boy. Breakin’ held it’s moment in the light above the underground with many appearances in The King of Pop’s videos and a soda pop commercial. And sadly will probably make an appearance at your cousin’s wedding. Why must every best man try to do “The Worm”? It is a tradition repeated so much it has lost it’s irony, but to witness reinforces the hold it has on our culture.
Enjoy the video below with it’s 1983 vision of the future. Newcleus presents “Jam on It” with tin foil shoulder pads and roadwarrior-esque studded accessories without the cynical apocolyptic look that the late 1980′s would deliver. A little robot thrown in with a sighting of probably the largest boom box I have ever seen caught on film.

Brixton has been all over highsnobiety and Hypebeast today. im personally digging the feel of Brixton’s new line for Spring/summer 2010, it’s reminding me of a mix of CVXXI & Brooklyn Circus. and the price point is totally reasonable. Hey they even have a girls line.
