Adam Smith Bleed Blue Opening
Posted by Ronnie Bullets on April 11th, 2010

Last Friday Jason Messina and I checked out some work by Adam Smith @ Part Time Studios, he has some really great work. Sorry it took so long for me to post this but here are some photos and a synopsis of the show.

THE SHOW:

This past First Friday we checked out Adam Smith’s gallery opening for his “Bleed Blue” series. He showed quite a few prints that centered around four main pieces each focusing on a different, very unique, blue-collar worker. My favorite was “The Welder”, complete with goggles, blowtorch, and weathered neck skin folds from years of high-rise welding. Behind him, off in the distance, a suspension bridge, no doubt built by the hands of welders like him. The same went for “The Lumberjack” with a forest behind him, “The Electrician”, with a background of telephone lines, and “The Carpenter” floating in front of an unfinished house frame. Each one heading to or from his respective craft in a dreamy, accomplished state of mind.

The theme of individual versus occupation, or artist embracing craft (depending on how you saw it) carried through out several other pieces. One that rang true was the purple, black and white print pictured below with an image of a browbeaten employee being whipped by his own computer with the fitting slogan “Working for the man is only half the plan.” Sigh.

The juxtaposition of these working class trades with Adam’s fanciful interpretation make for some stunning pieces that truly capture his adoration of the working class, his attention to detail, and the eternal struggle to make a living at something you love to do.
