B.K. Scum: works by Dust La Rock inspired by Psychic TV
Where the lines of art and music meet, there you shall find Dust La Rock. Fool’s Gold co-founder, prolific graphic designer, illustrator, and all-around creative figure, Dust has worked his way to the top of the NYC art scene, with a style and presence that’s intrinsically tied to the city’s thriving culture of hip-hop and electronic music. Dust has been a Mishka friend and favorite for quite a while, even collaborating with us …on last year’s goth/industrial Ov Curse mix. 2011, however, brings only bigger and better things.
We’re happy to announce that our next in-store exhibition at 350 Broadway is Dust La Rock presenting his new show, B.K. Scum. Borne of his fascination with seminal experimental collective and mixed media pioneers Psychic TV (a fascination we surely share), B.K. Scum promises to be an experience you won’t soon forget.
Opening Friday, March 4th, B.K. Scum will showcase Dust La Rock at his finest. Using Psychic TV as a starting point, Dust has forged a world all his own. Dust’s focus and mastery of imagery, symbols, and the power of iconography fits in perfectly with the ethos of Psychic TV, and an intellectual collaboration between the two was near unavoidable. For the show, Dust has created prints and paintings, as well as a fully functioning Psychic Cross guitar. In addition to Dust’s art, the opening will also feature a reading from Genesis P-Orridge, the founder and only constant member of Psychic TV. Genesis has been a magnetic and unfailingly innovative presence in music for decades, and his appearance is not to be missed.
It wouldn’t be a Dust La Rock show without a musical element, and B.K. Scum will be no different. Collaborating with Trouble & Bass’ leading lady Star Eyes, Dust has created a brand new mix exclusively for the show. The B.K. Scum mix traces the musical history of Psychic TV, showcasing hits and rarities in equal measure with exclusive vocals from Genesis. We at Mishka will also be officially releasing our own Psychic TV capsule collection, as well as an exclusive B.K. Scum tee shirt, which will be available for purchase at the show.
B.K. Scum will continue our growing tradition of exhibiting artists whose work we feel captures our world while also evolving it. As one of the architects of bleeding-edge musical imagery, Dust La Rock is the perfect artist, and Psychic TV an inspired choice of subject. We couldn’t be more excited for the show, and Dust La Rock will surely exceed all our expectations.
“Any good artist—and reasonably decent human be-in, for that matter—should draw inspiration from the people, places, and things that they relate to, and embrace those whose work has had a profound impact on their psyche. Such is my relationship with Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, a “counter-culture icon” and core member of Psychic TV (a companion to the organization once known as TOPY, now re-realized as the ONE TRUE TOPI TRIBE).”
“The purpose of this show is not only to pay tribute to the musical and visual contributions of Psychic TV and TOPI, but to heighten awareness of a consciousness outside our own and further the message of the TRIBE. That said, I present to you B.K. SCUM, a body of work created by me, for you, with Genesis’ blessing.”
