Shaolin Jazz: The 37th Chamber
Posted by Jesse.N on May 28th, 2011

One of the things, among many, that made Wu-Tang great was their beats, so the idea of tampering with those beats does not sit well with most people. Gerald Watson had the idea to not only change the beats but create something totally new by combining Wu-Tangs lyrical tracks with jazz. After being conceptualized by him he sought the help of DJ 2 Tone Jones to make the project a reality. I have been a fan of Wu-Tang since way back, and I have to say that I was super impressed with this. In the age of “mash up” where 1% of the mixes that are out there are actually quality, this is certainly part of that 1%. Get the mix tape here, and check out an interview with both parties, Gerald Watson, and DJ 2 Tone Jones about the project here!

Chums: The Vinyl Toy with a Big Mouth!
Posted by Ronnie Bullets on May 27th, 2011

I was just randomly doing the surfing the web thing and I ran across this “Chums“. Much like us here it takes a lot of Time and Money to produce something in large quantities. (OH WE KNOW we just released a magazine for free!) BUT i wanted to share this and maybe spread the wrd in helping someone produce something of there own. Chums need a funding goal of $25,000, every little bit counts so if you want to find out more about CHUMS follow the ink to his kickstart page.
Overview
As both digital artists and vinyl toy enthusiasts, we set out nearly one year ago to design and prototype a vinyl toy that would actually do something. But what utility could a vinyl toy offer? We decided on a little friend for our desks that could hold our tablet pens. The result of one year of creativity, fun, a bit of frustration and a lot of trial and error is complete. Part character design and part industrial design, Chums is made of physics, vinyl and an insatiable desire to hold that pen up high. Chums was the subject of intensive (and humane) testing in the modeling phase in order to ensure stability and a perfect fit for a tablet pen. If you’re worried that someone may come by and abscond with your pen, Chums comes with 22 menacing teeth to deter any would-be thieves.

Make No!se; Shane Pomajambo featuring VANS OTW.
Posted by Jesse.N on May 27th, 2011

Great video series here form Make No!se, a new project coming out of the DC area. If you follow OOPM, you know I used to live in DC, and I have never had favorable things to say about that city, however if more things like this were happening there and there were more people trying to do creative things that come from a good place, it would definitely be a better place. Check out the vids and give Make No!se your support, lord knows DC NEEDS things like this! In their own words, Make No!se is, a new lifestyle multimedia series where I highlight (via highly stylized photography and video) DC area creatives, such as artists, musicians, and DJs, that are making noise within their respective crafts/industries. Combined, these candid shots and video will tell two stories:
1.) How this person is building their brand
2.) The steps they take to create a branded project
We are into it, and you should be too. Here is the 3rd installment.

Rival Schools Interview
Posted by Jesse.N on May 26th, 2011
This interview was conducted the day after Rival Schools new record, Pedals, came out. We discussed the 10 years of lag time in between records, what it’s like playing together again after such a long time and the release show here in NYC. Enjoy it!

OOPM: Being that you guys have so much history as a band, even before Rival School, has it been easy after so much time to be able to come back together and feel like a band again?
Walter: It gets easier all the time, when we first got to playing again together we did a tour in 2008 and we kind of played around in Europe, we played the United States as well and that was really the first thing of seeing what it felt like to play together and play those old songs and get a sense of where we left off. With the album out now you know, we played last night in New York, it was a big show, sold out, all our friends were there and it just felt really great, and this tour we just did in the states was just excellent. So now I feel that much more solid. The cool thing about a band is that it’s always evolving, or I want this one to be that way.
OOPM: How did the reunion shows back in 2008 and 2009 come about?
Walter: We essentially broke up the band, but we didn’t so much say that we broke up the band, we wanted to leave it open to sort of do something in the future. I guess you call it a hiatus is what people call it, but we weren’t really sure that we’d ever do it again. So, over the years we’d get together every so often to try to write songs and see how it was going and it just got to where in 2008 Sam called me and was like, “hey dude, if we’re gonna ever do this it’s gotta be now, it’s been 10 years.” Doing the tour and getting out and playing was always with the intention of making an album to follow up United by Fate. As great as that album was to us and as important as it is to us, having not followed it up was kind of like something hanging over our heads, at least for myself anyway.

Riley Hawk
Posted by Jesse.N on May 25th, 2011

Here is Riley Hawk’s newest part. Maybe you’ve heard of his dad, Tony Hawk, however for the purposes of this post, there is no Tony Hawk. Riley more than holds his own. He has a style and a flow that does not just come from having a famous father. He’s obviously worked hard to get his skating game where it is. Aside from the awesome skating, there is an awesome sound track. It’s a beautiful day here in NYC, and hopefully where you are too…so go out and skate!
