“As we get closer and closer to DOOMsday we’re gonna be kicking out more and more treats. This one comes from Society Parks Chances R. He takes the infamous Ro.Co.Kane Flow beat and gives you an unfamiliar look at the death of a very familiar person. Enjoy!!”
Asses shaking, bitches fighting, people jumping, what more could you ask for from an evening? How about The Death Set! Franki Chan! Big FREEDIA! and Spank Rock!!! GOD DAMN! If you didn’t get out to CHECK YO PONYTAIL you have a few for chances to see this royal rump shaking good time. Next stop is Brooklyn in case you wanted to know.
I have to hand it to The Death Set with drumming help from Franki Chan they get me amped every time! There old skool punk flair mixed with proper house rocking Beastie Boys verbal styling all ways, all ways, all ways, is a pleaser. And from one person to another if you haven’t heard of Big Freedia (which i had not till now) you better get your shit together and your ass ready to more (very literally) cause this dude puts on a show! I’m tempted not to put photos of this ass-plosive, ass-travaganza, but for those in need of some booty I’m putting these up for you. And finally you have the one the only SPANK ROCK, who consistently drops song after song of good foot getting jams, shit was crazy! Again if you haven’t seen this event, you have three more chances! Beg, barrow or steal, do what ever it takes but get a move on it and get out to one of the three remaining shows you’ll be doing your self a favor!
React & Congress Theater Present FREAKY DEAKY III
w/ MSTRKRFT LAIDBACK LUKE, WOLFGANG GARTNER,
& ARAABMUZIK
Here is an idea for you for Halloween this Saturday since we know you are going to be out and about dressed up as zombie Steve jobs; too soon? Chicago is playing host to Freaky Deaky III with MSTKRFT, Laidback Luke, Wolfgang Gartner, and Araabmizik. Make sure to head down and check it out.
CHICAGO – Saturday, October 29th, React Presents and the Congress Theater are thrilled to announce the biggest FREAKY DEAKY in the history of FREAKY DEAKY’S! Recently reunited electro duo MSTRKRFT, the Prince of the new Dutch house sound LAIDBACK LUKE, Ultra Records’ own WOLFGANG GARTNER, and North Coast Music Festival alum ARAABMUZIK take over the Congress Theater for one historical night! Tickets are moving quickly and are available now at HERE!!!
After a monstrous performance at The Mid during Lollapalooza, electro Gods MSTRKRFT are ready to return to Chicago for the FREAKIEST DEAKY we’ve ever seen. With two new tracks form their upcoming album out, MSTRKRFT is ready to test even more new material out at the Congress Theater.
Laidback Luke has remixed everyone from Daft Punk to Green Velvet, Madonna to Coldplay, to Chromeo and Notorious BIG. This versatile producer has also worked with the biggest names in electronic dance music, including Tiesto, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, and countless others. His biggest hit to date came with the remake of Robin’s “Show Me Love,” which he produced along with Steve Angello, and made it to #11 on the UK Dance Charts. The Mid is still trying to recover from the last time he was in Chicago.
“I have to make something that’s never been made before; have to make the best thing that I’ve ever done in my life – otherwise it gets stagnant or worse,” says producer/DJ Wolfgang Gartner. Whether or not his progressively more maximalist take on electro-house is your bag or not, you have to respect his exponentially steep rise through the electro-house ranks. Flipping Beethoven’s 5th for the 4 am crowd; eight #1 tracks on Beatport; festival-highlight performances at Coachella ‘10 and this year’s North Coast Music Festival, Gartner is not slowing down.

This Friday (oct 28th) LA-based Check Yo Ponytail 2 party will bring their signature, genre-spanning style across America this Fall, with Spank Rock headlining the party’s first national tour. Check Yo Ponytail 2 is a party organized by the trio Franki Chan (IHEARTCOMIX), Danny Johnson (Media Contender) and Zane Landreth. CYP2 brings Los Angeles the best mix of new and established artists – from rock, dance, hip hop and all that is in between. The lineups will feature such acts as Spank Rock, Big Freedia, The Death Set, Pictureplane and Franki Chan, and will be supported by the stunning visuals of Demonbabies. Spank Rock’s performances will be hot of the heels of the release of his new album Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar on his own label Bad Blood Records on 9/27. The eagerly awaited album is produced by CYP2 friend Boys Noize.
For this first ever tour occasion, Franki Chan has made a “Yes We Chan” mix tape HERE.
In the past months, the party has made big waves with sold out shows of their eccentric line ups, and the various CYP2 mix tapes made exclusively for the occasion by the performing artists that have been premiered and covered by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Fader, Time, Aol, People etc.
For more background on the motivations of the CYP2 creators, you can find a comprehensive interview in LA Times’ Pop & Hiss HERE and Franki Chan, told Spinner “CYP’s main function is to introduce new artists or shine a spotlight on cool things that are happening musically. We like to be able to provide people with a wealth of information on each artist and the show as a whole. Adding to the experience are these mixtapes and our videos that give people something they can ‘take home’ with them and/or experience the show whether they live in L.A. of not.”
Philly icon and living legend, Questlove, was at The Blockley (38th and Chestnut) last Wednesday night spinning his nasty blend of classic funk/soul/breakbeats. Questo did his thing, per usual, schooling these kids on the foundations of Hip Hop by showcasing its essence through often sampled but relatively unknown 60s and 70s jams. The two Openers for Questlove were rapper Tom Charles and the brash brass infused rock/funk/soul band, Swift Technique.
It was my first time seeing Swift Technique and while it’s obvious these boys like to have a good time, they are no joke. Jake Leschinsky on bass is a destroyer with flair. The brass – Greg Rosen(Trumpet), Matt Fischer(Trombone), Brian Blaker(Tenor Sax) and Ian Gray(Trombone #2 who was supposed to be subbing for Matt on vacation before Matt surprised the crew to play the event.) – were tighter than a duck’s ass and even found a little time mid-set to bust out an impromptu b-boy circle while guitarist Andy Bree and drummer Rich Agren kept it funkier than a mosquito’s tweeter. The Philly sound is in good hands with these cats. Check them out EVERYTIME they play. You won’t regret it.
