SXSW

SXSW is coming up quick! There’s so many official events and unofficial free events. This will be my first year attending and already it’s insane to keep track of it all and I’m not even there yet! If anyone has been there before and has tips for helping out the feeling of being overwhelmed or knows of any events I should check out let me know. (I’ll be there 13th-16th)
I’ve included some flyers of some various shows that my friends have sent me.
I also have the chance to interview these bands/organizations while there so if you have questions please let them in the comments and state who they’re to.

In 2011, Vans OTW and The Blackouts (Ako and Atiba Jefferson) set out to create a free reggae compilation featuring music from VP Record’s vast catalog of artists. VP Records houses the best in reggae and dance hall music and the twin DJ duo spent weeks carefully selecting each artist for this vinyl compilation. Once the tracks were chosen, the Advocates and Vans set out for Jamaica to finalize the project. In Kingston and Trench Town, The Blackouts were able to walk the steps of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and photographed living reggae legends such as I Wayne, King Jammy and Ding Dong for the album artwork. Although The Blackouts time as OTW Advocates has come and gone, they’ll always be a part of the Vans family.
As a parting gift to all of the OTW/Vans fans, The Blackouts present this FREE limited edition album, available at select OTW retailers worldwide. Get a complete list of stockists and a closer look at the record after the jump!
When you’re told at a young age that you’re destined to work you entire life you better figure out a living that makes you damn happy. So, it’s a good thing Mark Baier taught himself how to make some high class guitar amps. His shop Victoria Amps produces the way they were made in 1955 so they perfectly capture that classic rock sound. For Baier, it’s about “doing what you love and doing it well.”

We are thrilled to have Derek Hess as a guest here at Jinxed THIS Saturday! He did a seven inch cover for Starkeather/Season to Risk, and a full read along comic/record for us when we were SuperModel Records. To welcome him here 15 years later to celebrate his work is going to be a blast.
Black Line White Lie is the long overdue book featuring over 275 black and white images by artist Derek Hess. This book covers over 20 years of his black and white drawings from images of his earliest flyers to some of his more recent works like Cancer of the Soul and Valentine. Derek dedicates this huge 300 page book to his fans which also includes a chapter of over 70 tattoos that people have done of his works.
Internationally-known artist Derek Hess has spent the past twenty years creating fine art & rock poster art that has not only made him a household name, but has also caught the attention of both the Louvre and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where his work is featured in both institutions permanent collections. In addition to numerous CD covers he has been featured on TLC, MTV, Fuse, VH1, Alternative Press, Spin, Juxtapoz Magazine and many others. After years of creating posters and flyers for well-known bands such as Deftones, Thursday, Every Time I Die and Taking Back Sunday, as well as his very popular fine art Hess has finally compiled a book of his much in demand Black and White drawings.

Check it out our man Adam Smith has a show this weekend at Paradigm Gallery on south st. If you have not checked out his work before now is a perfect time. The kind folks over at Paradigm Gallery have been wonderful enough to let me show my work at their space. I will have a good amount of new work, including a couple pieces in Prismacolor marker (which I haven’t used since Color Theory during freshman year at SCAD), as well as a few pieces that explore the possibilities of black and white. The show, titled Good Grief, opens February 24 at 6pm. The gallery is at 2020 South St. in Philadelphia.
