Chrome Artist Series: Lil Tuffy, Out Now!
Posted by Jesse.N on April 17th, 2012

These three bags were inspired by three towns with great cycling scenes, as well as just being all around awesome places, Portland, Austin, and Minneapolis. Only 100 were made of each one, so get em while you still can!

“Portland has become my home away from home over the past decade. I chanced upon the Chapman Swifts by accident and it was a pretty cool sight to behold and I think the community’s efforts to maintain the chimney for the Swifts embodies the Portland spirit.” – LT

Car Party
Posted by Crystal Shephard on April 13th, 2012

Car Party is a band from outside of Baltimore who formed only just about a year ago. They released a new single on April 3rd called Dollar Signs which you can buy on iTunes. You can go see them live when their tour finishes up in Philadelphia on April 22nd at the Legendary Dobbs on South St.

Why did you guys pick the name Car Party?
Taylor: I live in the middle of nowhere, we say that we’re from Baltimore but it’s like 45 minutes from Baltimore. So we would just take these joy rides out to Baltimore just for sight-seeing and stuff. It eventually became this thing called a car party so we were trying to think of a name for the band name and it was just like let’s go on a car party and think about it.

What’s it like working with Ace Enders?
Chris: It was really good. He kind of formed what we are as far as even the smallest tones and stuff. He really catered to Mike’s voice since he heard something that was different so he thought we should sort of revolve around that. He has a creative mind so he worked really well with us.

I know you guys formed after Taylor posted on craigslist but how long did it take for you guys to become a band?
Taylor: I guess technically a year. I found Mike first, him and I are the original members. Jim, we found like seven months ago.
Jim: No, it was this time last year. It was April.
Taylor: Are you serious? No, it was after cause we recorded in May. Our first show with you was in June.
Mike: About a year.
Taylor: And Chris came from another band, he was the only person I didn’t find on craigslist. We were playing shows with him and was like this is what we need.

June Divided
Posted by Crystal Shephard on April 13th, 2012

June Divided is a four piece band from Philadelphia that oddly enough I had never heard of until I decide to go to SXSW (even more odd since I have quite a few friends in common with them) They will be releasing their full length this spring/summer that they’ve currently been working on since being back from SXSW. They currently have out a cd called The Other Side Of You which is available on iTunes. They’ve been playing various shows along the East Coast this week in Delaware, Pittsburgh and even Philadelphia of course. Be sure to check out the Warped Tour site to find out what dates they will be playing. Also, if you ever see them at any of their favorite Philly bars be sure to say hello to them, they’re all super nice.

What’s your favorite Philly place since you guys are from there?
Lenny: Favorite place to play? Or just eat?

Eat, play, whatever.
Chris: Grey Lodge, Monks
Keith: Uh, there’s gotta be a place that we love. Where do we love?
Lenny: We just had Buffalo Wild Wings before we came here.
Chris: We don’t love that though. Yeah it’s not that great.
Lenny: I had a fun time.
Keith: I’d say the Grey Lodge.
Chris: Yeah we love our beer.

Favorite experience so far at SXSW?
Melissa: We played at Fuel for Music Gorilla and that was at like midnight on Wednesday and it was awesome. It was this tiny ass little it wasn’t even a stage it was just us basically crowded on top of each other. Somebody bought me a shot, the bartender was like somebody bought this for you.
Guys: We weren’t sure what to expect.
Melissa: I haven’t had that much fun playing a show in a long time. It was awesome, I love those kinds of shows.

I’m The Guy Your Mom Warned You About (The Used)
Posted by Crystal Shephard on March 25th, 2012

While at SXSW I had the incredible chance to meet and interview Bert McCracken and Quinn Allman. It was an interesting time to say the least and pretty great. Bert and Quinn are both really laid back and super nice. They have a new album that comes out tomorrow called Vulnerable! It’s their first album since Artwork which was released in 2009. Some songs have been released already by them and making their way around the internet. I’m really excited about it and have been so I’m definitely picking it up tomorrow and you all should as well.

Why did you guys wait so long to release a new album?
Bert: We’ve been writing for a while but it was also a mix up with the label like they picked up the option to put out our fifth record then like eight-night months later they actually dropped us from the record label. So it was just finding the momentum to do it on our own and start our own art production company. It’s a lot of hard work but we’re super glad it’s going down now.

Do you want to talk a little bit about your art production company?
Bert: We’ve been trying to start a record label for a long time and we wanted to put out our own music for the last five-six years. We thought instead of just doing a specific record label we would just start an art production company that is all-inclusive to anything creative from film, physical art, photography, food.
Quinn: Dancing, management. Anything that’s creative.
Bert: That we can have anything to do with and not be a bunch of scumbags by doing it. Like if we ever do sign a band we’re not gonna try to be like a record label. We just want to be the supportive figure, we wanna be like the daddy.
Quinn: It’s just something to facilitate all our needs.

Vulcanized Vinyl Vans X Nice Kicks SXSW Pop-up Shop
Posted by Ronnie Bullets on March 21st, 2012

Every March SXSW takes over the city of Austin, TX to host some of the BEST live music, films, parties, people and so much more. This year Vans and Austin’s very own, Nice Kick, decided to join forces to bring you Vulcanized Vinyl. The shop’s  grand opening was Friday, March 9th with a party @ Lodge on 6th street. Unfortunately, we were not down at SXSW yet, so we were unable to make it to the party but you can check out some photos HERE. Not only was the store part of the SXSW Vulcanized Vinyl experience, but Vans also hosted a premier for No Room For Rockstars, the Warped Tour documentary, on Tuesday, March 13th with a special performance by Pennywise (Photos HERE). This was followed up by the Vans Showcase on Wednesday the 14th. We were absolutely thrilled to score some passes to this show. After flying the 666 miles from Philadelphia to Chicago, then from Chicago to Austin, I was STOKED on getting to see this the first night we were at SXSW. The Showcase included FIDLAR, Penneywise, Jimmy Cliff, The Sword & Cage the Elephant. SOOOOOOO, needless to say, Vans had A TON of awesome stuff going on at SXSW this year.

Vulcanized Vinyl was one of those pop-up shops that was extremely well done, in all aspects, from concept to completion. We walked into 313 ½ E. 6th Street  through, what looked like 2 old garage doors that open into the space. The entrance was covered with Vans colab show posters and hanging bare bulb socket sets suspended from a heating vent from above. The combination of raw wood, cinder blocks, pallets and damask wallpaper reminded me of when I did display work for Urban Outfitters. This, with the combination of shelves lined with Vans Classics, California models, tees, tanks, and accessories and a limited edition Vulcanized Vinyl tee backed by classic vinyl and some rock memorabilia (for lack of a better word) gave an awesome feel to the space. The space itself was not too big in size, but needless to say, worked out very well. Everyone that was working the space was super friendly and made the vibe of the room extremely chill.

The Gallery
Posted by Crystal Shephard on March 20th, 2012

The Gallery is a four piece folk rock band from Massachusetts who made their way out to California. They’re compared to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and other various rockers from the 60′s/70′s. They released an EP called Come Alive on February 22, 2011 which is available through iTunes and plan on working on some new music soon.

How did you guys meet and form The Gallery?
The Gallery: Ryan and I (Brendan) are brothers and we met by default. We met Dave through some mutual friends actually. I was in middle school and these guys were in highschool we kinda started playing. Ryan and I started playing together, Dave joined in once it clicked we all sort of became fast friends. We went to California together from Mass. just trying to do what we can to keep doing it. Ben just joined the band a couple of months ago from a music school in Boston, he decided to take a break and move out to California.

Cool, how’s that been?
The Gallery: It’s been cool, I’m (Ben) originally from California so it was basically just moving back home.

How do you like Boston compared to California?
The Gallery: It’s a cool place I (Ben) had a lot of fun there. The weather was probably one of the hardest things to get used too.

I saw that you call West Palm Beach your second home, why’s that?
The Gallery: Yeah, I guess that’s a little outdated at this point but we lived there for like five years for these guys. That’s where they decided to go to college so Ryan had to transfer schools to keep the band together. We worked down there for a while, went to school and made tons of friends, that’s kinda been our home base up until recent change. We’re now one of those bands who move to LA. LA has been awesome, definitely glad we decided to move so that’s why West Palm Beach is kinda our second home.

To Write Love On Her Arms
Posted by Crystal Shephard on March 20th, 2012

My interview with Chad from To Write Love On Her Arms was fairly short and stuck primarily to about what TWLOA does and the movie Renee. The reason for this is because I didn’t want to get too deep into subjects since I’m sure hours could be spent talking about any portion of what TWLOA helps with. Also due to my own personal issues of things I’ve seen friends go through or heard about, decided it was best to not end possibly a little upset and keep the day cheery. It’s really great that TWLOA has been created since it gives people some where for support for their selves or even loved ones and helps to try to make it a little easier talk about addiction, self-injury, etc rather than hiding it and trying to cope alone.

How did TWLOA become so well known when it started out so small?

Chad: I’d say probably the biggest way we’ve grown is just through supporters wanting to talk about these issues. We started back in 2006 just trying to help a friend and tell her story. It really blew up from there because people said this story sounds familiar, this story sounds like people in my life or it maybe even sounds like my life. And just being encouraged by people breaking the ice and talking about it. I feel like it’s just been that from day one to six years down the road. People aren’t foreign to these ideas; depression, addiction, injury and suicide.

Yeah it’s like sort hidden until you guys came out more.

Chad: Totally. So if we’ve done anything it’s just been creating a safe place to talk about these issues. We’ve gotten big by people just taking on the challenge of talking about it. READ MORE AFTER THE JUMP »»
