Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records & Motion City Soundtrack’s The Boombox Generation Announce Official SXSW Making Moves Showcase!
Posted by Crystal Shephard on March 7th, 2012

Check Out Motion City Soundtrack’s Making Moves Announcement here.

WHAT: DREXEL UNIVERSITY’S MAD DRAGON RECORDS & MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK’S THE BOOMBOX GENERATION OFFICIAL SXSW MAKING MOVES SHOWCASE

WHERE: CLIVE BAR | 609 DAVIS STREET | AUSTIN, TX

WHEN: MARCH 14TH | 8PM

Philadelphia, PA – February 29, 2012 – Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records (MDR) and Motion City Soundtrack’s recently launched record label, The Boombox Generation, are pleased to announce the official Making Moves kick-off showcase at the annual South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 14that Clive Bar, with the first performance starting at 8PM. Motion City Soundtrack will headline the official Making Moves showcase with all of the emerging artists in the series (The Company We Keep, Brick + Mortar, Goldrush, The Skies Revolt, and A Great Big Pile of Leaves) performing during the evening.

Making Moves is a series of 7″ single releases by emerging artists curated by Motion City Soundtrack. The singles will be released on limited edition 7″ vinyl and digitally via MAD Dragon Records and Motion City Soundtrack’s recently launched record label, The Boombox Generation. The Making Moves series will be distributed by the Alternative Distribution Alliance. Making Moves artists include: The Company We Keep (Detroit, MI), Brick + Mortar (Asbury Park, NJ), Goldrush (Richmond, VA), The Skies Revolt (Grand Rapids, MI) and A Great Big Pile of Leaves (Brooklyn, NY). Additionally, Motion City Soundtrack will contribute two new songs for the series. The Company We Keep will begin the schedule of artist releases on April 24th, 2012 and each additional artist will be released throughout the year.

Members of Motion City Soundtrack (Justin Pierre, Josh Cain, Matt Taylor, Jesse Johnson, and Tony Thaxton) produced all of the artists’ recordings between November 2011 and January 2012. The sessions took place at Drexel University’s studios in Philadelphia, PA with Drexel’s Music Industry Program alumni and undergraduate students, Lenny Skolnick, Dave Petit and Justin Chapman engineering the sessions. The recording process was documented by students from the Drexel Film & Video program for a documentary “Making Of” DVD that will accompany a box set including all titles and will be released in late 2012.

The project came together at the annual South By Southwest Music Conference (SXSW) in March 2011. According to Jesse Johnson of MCS, “Last year, I was at SXSW with the band I manage, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, and Terry Tompkins attended their showcase. Johnson said, “After a few emails and phone calls, the Making Moves project was hatched; it went from simply doing a A Great Big Pile of Leaves seven inch to Motion City Soundtrack curating the series.” Matt Taylor of MCS adds, “I’m hoping that people will be inspired by the collaboration and the many different factions involved with the series. We came together with a common goal of releasing music that we’re excited about. We want those who hear it to share in this excitement with us.”

“It is a privilege for the students in the Music Industry Program and MAD Dragon Records to work with Motion City Soundtrack (MCS) for the Making Moves Series,” said Terry Tompkins, Associate Teaching Professor of the Music Industry Program and Managing Director of the Music Industry Program Entities at Drexel University. “This partnership provides a rare opportunity for our students to work with an accomplished and recognized band. Their (MCS) interest and enthusiasm to work with our students has exceeded our wildest expectations.”

Supermagical Dunny by 64 Colors – new release from Kidrobot
Posted by Matt Eyer on February 16th, 2012

I always look forward to the 8 inch dunnys and this one is no exception. 64 Colors have quickly become some of my new favorite artists. Their unique style is always recognizable and brings me back to a fairy tale land. You might remember their additions to the Dunny Series 2011, which were some of the best of the series in my opinion.

This 8 inch beauty will be available online and in stores starting February 23rd. I haven’t confirmed that Jinxed Philly will have this guy yet, but they always have the latest and greatest from Kidrobot, so I would say it’s a safe bet that they will. To celebrate the release, 64 Colors will be doing signings at the Kidrobot stores in NYC, Miami and San Francisco.  Feb 22-24, respectively. As an added bonus,64 colors have also created a limited edition Supermagical Walking Staff. Handmade from a single piece of walnut, each staff measures 6.5 inches and is painted with a mushroom face and arms. These special accessories will only be available to the first 30 customers at each signing event, so act quick!

FatCap series 3 by Kidrobot
Posted by Matt Eyer on February 1st, 2012

Kidrobot just released the third collection in their FatCap series, a collection of vinyl toys customized by graffiti artists and illustrators from around the world. The name comes from their resemblance to a spray nozzle and the figures also include an inner rattle that mimics the sound of an aerosol can.

I wasn’t previously a fan of FatCaps, but this new series definitely steps it up a level. 14 different artists helped design these guys including Julie West, Sket One, Flying Förtress and Kronk.

Get your FatCap fix at Jinxed Philly, located in the Piazza right below 2nd and Girard.

Huck Gee in-store/Book Signing @ Jinxed
Posted by Jinxed on January 8th, 2012

Please join us(Jinxed) in welcoming Huck Gee to Philadelphia! He will be here at Jinxed signing the white cover edition of his book, ‘The Art of Huck Gee’ from 6-8p.m.. Books will be available for sale. (and we’ll have snacks…’)

For those of you not familiar, Mr. Gee is the premier designer of vinyl toys today.
A native of the UK, Huck Gee moved to San Francisco in the early 90s to pursue the venerable life of a b-boy & artist. Starting off as a graphic designer by day and a graffiti writer and break beater by night, He later honed his skills as an illustrator delving into the alluring world of Japanese and Hong Kong pop art. Huck has released numerous limited edition toys through Kidrobot, including some of the most exclusive and sought after Dunnys to date. In the winter of 2007, his Hello My Name Is 8-inch Dunny was accepted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC. He currently runs a studio in San Francisco, and when he is not busy planning world domination, he spends his time chasing skirts and pretending to be a racecar driver.
Most recently Huck collaborated with Ken Block and DC Shoes for Ken’s Monster World Rally Team WRC logo entitled “Blockhead”. Coinciding with this project were several limited edition shoe and clothing runs.
We’re thrilled Huck chose us to be a stop on his U.,S. book tour. Stop by for a beverage and to say hello!

Some Real Class Shit: Plow United Sleepwalk: A Retrospective Double LP & CD
Posted by Matt.Rodrigue on January 4th, 2012

Plow United
Sleepwalk: A Retrospective CD
Paper + Plastic Records
Release: 9/2011

Delaware’s Plow United began their relatively short career in 1992 as simply Plow. Within a few years, they received both an invitation to make records for West Chester, Pennsylvania’s Creep Records and a letter from a Baltimore-based band of the same name. The letter claimed rights to the name, and asked the Pennsylvania band to please find a new moniker. It was an offer they couldn’t refuse. By the release of 1995’s Plow United (Creep), Plow United had settled on a permanent name, and began touring with the likes of Good Riddance, Bouncing Souls, and At the Drive-In.

By 1997, the band turned down offers from major labels, and went on an indefinite hiatus. As the 2000s approached, Plow United showed no signs of reforming. However, this didn’t stop a few labels from cashing in releasing both new and old Plow material. In 1998 Creep Records released a third LP, Narcolepsy, which stood as an about face regarding the band’s earlier lighter, pop-punk approach. In 2000 Coolidge Records released a compilation of non-album tracks and other loose ends. In 2005, Blackout Records released a re-mastered version of 1996’s Goodnight Sellout with the self-titled record added on as a bonus. The Coolidge Records reissue did little else other than raise the ire of the band members who felt that the re-released record’s tone and packaging lacked inspiration. The band would have to wait until 2011, after having come to an agreement with Creep Record execs, to regain control over their material.  After nearly 15 years of inactivity, Plow United emerged from—well, let’s be honest, complete fucking obscurity— to play Philadelphia’s Riot Fest on Penn’s Landing in the early fall of 2011. The event was accompanied by the release of a double album called Sleepwalk: A Retrospective (Paper + Plastic Records).

THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? THEN WE WANT YOU!!!!
Posted by Ronnie Bullets on December 22nd, 2011

Out of Print Magazine is a digital lifestyle magazine based in New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago that focuses on 4 main categories; fashion, music, bikes, and art. We are currently looking for contributors for all categories to offer news, interviews, reviews, and cover events. Being that we are a new magazine, we cannot afford to pay you, I know it sucks…BUT we can offer you a few other things. First of all it’s a forum to get your name out there and get yourself broadcast to a wider audience. Secondly, if you contribute with us on a regular basis and we like your work, as soon as we can afford to pay you, you will be the first ones to get whatever loot we can throw your way. There are also certain perks that come along with writing for our magazine like free stuff, (clothes, music, samples, etc…) as well as free events, of course you’re not going to be paying for events you are covering. We are also embarking on a new endeavor, which is a print issue. Again, if you contribute to the online mag, we are probably going to want you to contribute to the print mag as well, and that is another credit for you and of course gets your writing out there to more people.

PHOTOGRAPHERS!!! Listen up, we want you as well. We are looking for photographers in all major cities that are out there documenting events as they go down. Take a look at the mag online and the kinds of things that we cover, those are the things we want you to cover in your city. We are pretty awesome, but we cannot be everywhere at once, so we need your help. Same payment rules and perks apply from above.

We are not just looking for people to send a couple of articles/photos our way and disappear, we are looking for people who want to write for us and help us grow and expand as a publication. The more we grow and expand, the more we can offer you for helping us do so. Get in touch with us if you are interested. Please send all related writing samples, photos, death threats, haikus, web links, etc, to…

submissions@outofprintmag.com

Please let us know where you are located and what category you are interested in submitting for; fashion, art, bikes, or music.
