RED BULL THRE3STYLE RETURNS TO THE MID
One year ago, Chicago based DJ Big Once started his journey to becoming the Red Bull Thre3Style National Champion by taking the Red Bull Thre3Style – Chicago title at The Mid. On April 18th Red Bull Thre3Style returns to The Mid with Six of the Midwest’s top DJs facing off to earn their chance to vie for the 2012 Red Bull Thre3Style World Championship.
Red Bull Thre3Style is an innovative concept that gives highly skilled DJs a global platform to showcase their skills, battle and gain notoriety by rockin’ the dance floor. Unlike other DJ battles that are based on solely technical aspects, Red Bull Thre3style has a creative and original format that seeks to find the DJ that has best perfected the true art of “party rockin’.” Six of the Midwest’s top DJs will vie for the audience and judges’ favor, each with a 15-minute set that MUST contain at least three different musical genres. A panel of music industry judges will select the winners based on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, stage presence and crowd reaction; and ultimately decide who is the best on the decks in Chicago. June Divided is a four piece band from Philadelphia that oddly enough I had never heard of until I decide to go to SXSW (even more odd since I have quite a few friends in common with them) They will be releasing their full length this spring/summer that they’ve currently been working on since being back from SXSW. They currently have out a cd called The Other Side Of You which is available on iTunes. They’ve been playing various shows along the East Coast this week in Delaware, Pittsburgh and even Philadelphia of course. Be sure to check out the Warped Tour site to find out what dates they will be playing. Also, if you ever see them at any of their favorite Philly bars be sure to say hello to them, they’re all super nice.
What’s your favorite Philly place since you guys are from there? Lenny: Favorite place to play? Or just eat?
Eat, play, whatever. Chris: Grey Lodge, Monks Keith: Uh, there’s gotta be a place that we love. Where do we love? Lenny: We just had Buffalo Wild Wings before we came here. Chris: We don’t love that though. Yeah it’s not that great. Lenny: I had a fun time. Keith: I’d say the Grey Lodge. Chris: Yeah we love our beer.
Favorite experience so far at SXSW? Melissa: We played at Fuel for Music Gorilla and that was at like midnight on Wednesday and it was awesome. It was this tiny ass little it wasn’t even a stage it was just us basically crowded on top of each other. Somebody bought me a shot, the bartender was like somebody bought this for you. Guys: We weren’t sure what to expect. Melissa: I haven’t had that much fun playing a show in a long time. It was awesome, I love those kinds of shows.
Earlier today I stumbled upon some images of the new Affinity Cycles and Mishka collaboration bike. Before I go any further I’d like to say I rock Mishka gear on the regular, especially in the summertime. I also love the guys over at Affinity and really dig their frames, really good quality at a reasonable price. With that being said, when I heard they were going to collaborate on a bike I got pretty stoked. It was like getting an evite to the pizza and cupcake party hosted by big titty hookers. Unfortunately upon arrival to the party
SXSW!

SXSW was amazing and I wasn’t there long enough. I can’t wait to go again next year! I missed out on so much (Workaholics House Party, Andrew WK, etc.) However, I got to meet a bunch of incredible people, interview a bunch of bands (interviews coming soon!), go to the TXRG’s warehouse and get a new tattoo.
The TXRG were all super nice, well the few that were there for practice that night anyway. It was pretty awesome to hear stories about games, penalties, rules, etc and to sit in the middle while they skated around the bank track.
And if you’re ever in Austin and want a tattoo then make sure you head over to Triple Crown Tattoo. They all have amazing work but I decided to have Zach be the one I got a tattoo from since I really liked his style and line work. The tattoo I got from him was better than anything I could have imagined and is easily my favorite. He travels around a lot so even if you never make it to Austin I’m sure you can find him somewhere close to you eventually. As for around this area he’ll be making his way up to Brooklyn for a few days in April.
This Wednesday, February 1st, Van Gogh Up Close will be opening at the Philadelphia Art Museum. I’m really excited for it as I love Van Gogh’s work. I just purchased my ticket for the guided tour Friday morning and can’t wait! Below is an overview of the exhibit from visitphilly.com
Philadelphia will be the only place in the United States to see the incredible collection of works by Vincent van Gogh that helped change the course of modern painting. Created between 1886-1890, these paintings captured the final tumultuous years of van Gogh’s life and his feverish artistic experimentation up until his death.
Radically altering and often outright abandoning traditional painting techniques, van Gogh shunned conventional still life and landscape methods and experimented with depth of field and focus. Familiar subjects were brought “up close” into the extreme foreground or were focused on in unprecedented ways.
Van Gogh Up Close highlights his shift in tradition with more than 40 masterpieces borrowed from collections around the world. Pieces of fruit threaten to roll out of the picture, tree trunks dominate the frame and the intricate patterning of an Emperor moth are just a few scenes to explore during the exhibition.
