Well, we’ve been talking about it for a while now, leaking tracks and covering events all leading up to the release of “Camden High and Rising” from The Nuthouse. If you’re not familiar with who The Nuthouse is, then I invite you to use the search box and read our previous posts because I’m not going to re-visit at this juncture. I’m trying to get into the music.
If you’re over the age of 20 and have ever been into hip hop, more than likely De La Soul has a special place in your heart, I know they do in mine. I was mostly into punk rock growing up, but being that I skated I was also exposed to hip hop and was always listening to Gang Starr, De La, and the list goes on. As things have evolved over the years hip hop as lost some of the soul and smooth “flow”, if you will, that it used to have. This is not to say that there has not been good hip hop in recent years, just different hip hop. Well Dave Ghetto and Fel Sweetenberg feel the same way and have struck out to bring back that old school vibe that is missing, and they have come through strong on this one. Partnering with legendary producer Prince Paul they are bringing back classic De La Soul tracks, that Paul himself originally produced, and adding their own east coast flavor. It’s impossible to re-create a classic, however it is possible to pay homage to an inspiration for an entire generation of hip hop, and The Nuthouse has successfully done this with Camden High and Rising. On each track when the beat drops it instantly made me smile, thinking of the original De La songs, and seeing how they have spun it their own way. Instead of being left disappointed like hearing someone butcher a classic cover song, we were left appreciating the mix of old and new. The Nuthouse started with a classic foundation and built on it in a style a flow that they know and do well. Camden High and Rising is more than solid, and should make you thirsty for their untitled album that is in the works and will hopefully be coming out sooner rather than later.

Dave Ghetto and Fel Sweetenberg bring you a tribute to De La Soul with The Nuthouse, following their mix tape, “Camden High and Rising”, which was hosted by legendary producer Prince Paul and Set Free. Prince Paul is best known as one of the founding members of the Gravediggaz, as well as producing the first 3 De La Soul albums, among others. The coupling of Paul, Set Free, Ghetto, and Sweetenberg creates an appropriate force for a tribute to De La Soul, considering Paul’s heritage with the group as well as the similar east coast flavor from Dave Ghetto and Fel Sweetenberg. Right now we’re bringing you a bonus track from the mix tape, “Ohh”, which will not be on the record. Make sure to check back with us as we will be bringing you more information on The Nuthouse as we get it. Right now the release date is TBA, but we’ll be the first to get it to you when it’s available!
Last Thursday Jessop and myself headed to The Walnut Room to check out The Compounds (SET FREE, DJ AMBUSH & DJ SHORTY WOP) OTW Series. I showed up to meet Jessop, who was already inside. One of the guys told me when I showed up that, “there was going to be a mustache off” (Jessop and I both have handle bar mustaches) I laughed, “I know that guy” I told him. I got upstairs and Jessop had his Handsome Boy Modeling School look going on. The night was a great time with DJ sets by DJ SHORT WOP, DJ AMBUSH & PRINCE PAUL. Make sure you are on the look out for the next Off The Wall Series @ The Walnut Room.
